The holidays can be a stressful time especially when you are hosting. So much goes into planning and preparing the meal that we sometimes overlook the actual table setting, including the centerpiece. It’s game day and you’re down to the wire. Don’t stress, look around and see what you can put together in a jiff.

Down to the Wire Condiments

Condiments make great down to the wire centerpiece savers. Start with any shape of wood cutting board or serving platter. Add salt & pepper shakers, butter dish, gravy boat, and any special sauces based on the meal. Garnish the display with a sprig of fresh herbs or a few slices of dried fruit. Or garnish with whatever you have on hand, such as votive candles or wrapped candy.

Water Pitcher Centerpiece Saver

Use a water pitcher and glasses as the centerpiece and let guests help themselves. Use a small dish to set the pitcher on and plate sliced lemons alongside. Alternatively, use a dinner plate for the water pitcher and circle lemons around the pitcher. Glassware can be displayed around the plate.

Candles

Decorate flameless candles with ribbon or raffia. One large candle or a few in varying sizes look good grouped together. Wrap the candle with the ribbon and tuck in an embellishment such as dried flowers or a greenery stem. Or attach a gift tag with a simple word or greeting. When using one candle, add an ornament on each side for some color.

Plants are Centerpiece Savers

If you have a small house plant currently occupying another space, bring it to the table. Live or artificial plants are centerpiece savers and work equally well assuming they are in a suitable container.

Knick-Knacks

Knick-knacks grouped together will suffice as a centerpiece. If you have 2 of a kind, place them on either side of a candle. Smaller knick-knacks can be displayed on a tray. When possible, follow the rule of 3 (a trio is more appealing). Fill a vase with ornaments, glass beads, candy, or mini wrapped presents.
