The Christmas Nutcrackers tablescape draws on a fun, build it yourself nutcrackers set accessorized with musical instruments as the centerpiece. For this theme, a table runner replaces the tablecloth and displays images of nutcrackers on each end. Multi-patterned plates sit atop red placemats. Red napkins with gold trimmed silverware and Christmas “nut” crackers adorn the tablescape.
Nutcrackers and Christmas
Decorative figurines resembling soldiers first appeared in Germany in the 17th century. Given as gifts for special occasions, particularly Christmas, the nutcracker soldier quickly became associated with the holiday.
The nutcracker’s fierce expressions symbolize strength and perseverance and belief was to keep evil spirits at bay. Their bared teeth were a sign of protection, and people started to place them in their homes.
The nutcrackers also took on the attributes of figures of authority, including kings, soldiers, and forest guards.
The nutcrackers we love today are mostly used as decorative ornaments, especially at Christmas time. They’re also available in a variety of colors. Red and black are the most common, but other hues such as gold and green have also been popular. These colors reflect the original German folk belief that certain colored nutcrackers had special powers.
Christmas Nutcrackers Centerpiece
The Christmas nutcrackers centerpiece started with a building block set which assembles like Lego blocks. The set comes with four nutcrackers. The nutcrackers connect together, but you can display them individually as shown in my centerpiece.
Usually the nutcrackers appear on the Christmas brunch buffet. However, when Christmas Eve needed a fill-in, the nutcrackers showed up and took center (piece) stage.
There are many ways to display the nutcrackers for this centerpiece. Pictured here, clear risers elevate the musicians as they stand ready to play. Although the nutcrackers are just over 8 inches, the risers draw attention to the individual players. Meanwhile, the bandmaster leads at table level.
Mini wrapped gifts and pine trees disperse around the stage to complete the centerpiece.
Alternatively, you can put the bandmaster on a riser and leave the three nutcracker musicians connected together at table level.
Another option is to not use any risers and display the nutcrackers in a circle facing out, with the trees in the center. This set-up allows guests a good view of the centerpiece from any seat.
Nutcrackers Table Runner
A table runner is better suited than a tablecloth for the Christmas nutcracker theme. Buffalo plaid in red compliments the centerpiece, while the nutcracker design on each end helps to pull the theme together.
Colorful Dinnerware
Colorful dinnerware in different patterns sit atop red placemats. The bold colors and differing patterns of the dinnerware resemble the bold colors and individuality of Christmas nutcrackers.
Red napkins with gold trimmed silverware and Christmas crackers (party favors) complete each place setting.
